Deciding on an Aesthetic for your Home

admin · October 28, 2016

Home design is all about finding just the right look for you and your family. It’s about deciding what suits your lifestyle, your tastes and the building you live in. Once you’ve decided on the look you’re going for, everything else will begin to fall into place and you will soon be living in the beautiful home you’ve always dreamed of.

Home design can be grouped into three main categories: traditional, contemporary and classic. Here is some more information about each type of home you could choose:

Traditional

This aesthetic will suit: country cottages, farmhouses, Victorian houses, cosy homes.

Choose a traditional home for style and class in abundance. Traditional homes are great fun to create as they will usually make use of accessories and ornaments as well as elegant furniture and design schemes. Think country kitchens with islands and agas, floral patterns and large wooden fireplaces.

Traditional homes are all about getting the balance right. You don’t want them to end up looking old fashioned – be careful not to overdo the florals and frills. Make sure your home gets enough natural light and mix traditional furnishings with light pastel colours and pale wooden floorboards. This will make sure your home retains a sense of openness and space alongside its traditional decor.

Contemporary

This aesthetic will suit: new builds, apartments, open plan homes.

Cool, contemporary homes are becoming increasingly popular as house styles change and develop. Living is becoming more open plan and families want to make the most of the room they have. Modern prints, bright colours and minimal furnishings will make sure homes feel spacious without being cold or clinical.

Contemporary homes will usually feature wooden or tiled flooring and sharp, clean lines. If you have an especially large open plan room, you may want to select a feature to be your focal point. Popular ideas include staircases, windows and stoves. Wood and multi fuel burners are available in all kinds of designs, some of which are highly contemporary and will look beautiful in the most modern of settings.

Classic

This aesthetic will suit: any type of home! The classic look is beautiful and timeless.

If you want your home to remain unaffected by faddy fashions, the classic look is for you. Classic homes get the best of both worlds, mixing tradition with contemporary modern style that won’t go out of date. Your house will look homely yet endlessly stylish at the same time.

Owners of classic homes will often get very good value for money when selling their property. This is because the classic look won’t age – your property will continue to look chic for many years to come.
